Properties for a Well-Fitting Chair

A properly fitting office chair can make all the difference in your personal comfort. The more hours each day that you use your chair, the more important a good fitting chair becomes. Here are some guidelines to determine how well your chair fits.

  • Adjustable seat height allowing you to sit with shoulders relaxed and feet well support (on ground or footrest).    Correct Posture - Spine
  • Good back support. Chair should support the natural curve of your back (lumbar curve) at the correct height. Ideally, the upper (thoracic) back should be supported. A back with independent angle adjustment and back lumbar height adjustment will help provide the right fit.
  • Seat width fits you – not too wide which may position the chair arms too far out or not too narrow that you thighs overflow the seat edges.
  • Seat Depth to allow you to sit back in the chair with about 2-3” between the front seat edge and the back of your calves. If the seat is too long, it doesn’t provide sufficient back support.
  • Seat tilt to allow independent adjustment of the seat tilt. A slightly forward tilted seat opens up your seat posture and may help reduce stress along the back of the thighs.
  • Arm rests that provide arm support to allow your shoulders to be relaxed and elbows near your sides. Ideally, a soft arm rests with pivot or lateral adjustments will provide more comfort and support. Height and width adjustable arms allow you to adjust to the most comfortable height and allow access to the desk. Arm rests may help reduce stress on your shoulders and back.
  • Five-star base for stability.
  • Comfortable fabric that is breathable and easily cleanable.
